of the moments was the time obama had to talk explicitly about race. right here in philadelphia. but as the first black president can talk the least about race. he knows he cannot discuss it but part of what he tried to do was say let me say something to bring people together then i don't have to bring it up again. that was quintessential paranoia that americans are so acute, resistant, to even bring up the idea they will disqualify from the highest lot of the land. to say there are ways to address differences, racial or class but it brings a buddy together. that is a nice model. it doesn't have to be race specific to have racial equality everybody to have a piece of the pie but the irony is a dedicated to invoke race disqualifies because people are so upset and alienated of racial inequality and discrimination. it is an incredible difficult scenario to stand up as a first black president cannot talk about race because that would define the disqualification. their own negotiating same periodic -- variations. >> host: are white americans' overly sensitive with the race card? >> guest: we all are.

may end up compromising? >> well, the level at which taxes will rise above where they are right now, so obama's insistence has been, if you make over $250,000 a year, on the income over 250 you pay a little more in the new rates he's proposing. now, he's been willing -- it's been reported that he's gone as high as 400,000 in the negotiations with boehner. so that's a place for agreement. the other place is the estate tax. the estate tax is scheduled to rise by quite a bit at the stroke of midnight tomorrow night. republicans want to keep it low, democrats want it to go up a little bit. there's room for compromise there. and so, you know, it's not just marginal rates that are going up, there's a series of taxes that they're going to change. the thing that could not be settled today was this change cpi. essentially a benefit cut for social security recipients. that led to a breakdown in negotiations today, because republicans wanted those benefit cuts to social security. and democrats said no way. and that was the sticking point and that's when this thing moved from the senate over to

there will be a vote. some say they think we're going over the cliff. listening to president obama in a rare sunday show interview yesterday, he's obviously making it known, if we do go over the cliff, he is prepared to point the finger at republicans. here's what he said. >> all right. so we're struggling to bring you that sound, but basically he was saying that republicans are trying to protect the wealthy when it comes to taxes. and to that point, ali, we do have new information about where the proposal stands at this point according to democratic sources. they have actually gone up to saying $450,000, the first $450,000 of income, that would be protected from a tax increase. so that's higher, obviously, than what the president's starting point was, which was $250,000, and even higher than where he ended in his sort of discussions with speaker boehner about a larger deal. he was at 400 there. obviously, republicans want higher than that. we'll see where that number comes out. >> it's valid to say something's happening. in other words, that at least gives you some sense of negotiation, which is a
